MMA aficionado Dexter Johnson of Saskatchewan missed part of the press lecture at a recent CrossFit Level 1 Certificate Course after asking instructor Jason MacDonald to apply a modified guillotine choke to render him unconscious. MacDonald, a former UFC fighter with a 25-16 record, was happy to oblige.
Johnson, who enthusiastically trains both CrossFit and MMA, confessed after awakening that he’s well aware he’ll never actually step in the octagon, so he didn’t want to miss the chance to “spar” with an accomplished professional fighter from his country.
“When am I ever going to have a chance to get choked out by a pro?” he asked. “I’ve been a huge fan of ‘The Athlete’ for years, and I just really wanted to know what it would feel like to have him put the lights out with the exact same hold he used on Chris Leben in UFC 66: Liddell Vs. Ortiz.”
Johnson, who has been choked out many times in training by peers, said the professional application was “a sublime masterpiece” unlike any choking he’d previously experienced.
He explained: “In training, it’s usually some clumsy dude fumbling to get it right, which gives me time to flail away, think about what I’ll have for dinner, and so on. When Jason locked down the guillotine, I knew I was done immediately. No tap-out, no thoughts of taco salad. Just a quick descent into the blissful darkness below.”
MacDonald was happy to oblige a big fan but wasn’t going to cut Johnson any slack when it came to the test at the end of the seminar.
“I was happy to fulfill his dream, but he’s still responsible for the content he missed while he was drooling on the rubber during the Nutrition lecture.”
