Goodyear, Arizona– Five-time individual CrossFit Games veteran gave a stunning performance disappoint during last night’s announcement of Open workout 18.4. Panchik beat three-time CrossFit Games veteran Björgvin Karl Guðmundsson with time to spare.
The Overheard Press was granted an exclusive interview with Panchik after the event, and we asked him if there were any secrets to his success. His answer came as no surprise.
“Milk,” Panchik said, wiping sweat from his brow. “I chugged a gallon of milk before coming out on stage here. I do it right before the workouts I really need to win.”
Panchik described this pre-game routine, known as “milk loading,” as a trick he learned from CrossFit Games champ Matt Fraser, who made a similar announcement after 17.3.
“If I’m nervous before an event, I just pound a jug or two of whole milk. It calms me down, helps me pace, and gives me the boost of energy I need to win.”
But are the performance-enhancing benefits of drinking milk right before an workout just a myth? As it turns out, there may be more to it than that.
“Intense exercise builds up lactate in the blood,” says Dr. Harmon Gates, Professor of exercise science at Pepperdine University.
“The opposite of lactate is lactose, so ingesting milk prior to exercise can offset the effects of muscle fatigue considerably.”
But does drinking a gallon of milk just before exercise have any negative side effects? Dr. Gates doesn’t think so.
“The body is designed to process milk quickly and the added fluid can only help with hydration. In fact I think the more the better.”
